Veterans Park
7 miles of single track in Lexington Kentucky
Veterans Park in Lexington officially is only stated at having 7 miles of single track, however, that does not include older tracks, walking tracks, etc., so don't immediately think the park is small, and the trails are few. Veterans offers various loops and trail combinations and is a great ride if you're in the Lexington area. There is lots of parking, connectors to get to the trails from various parts around the park, and great signage on the trails so you know where you are at any given point. As always, before you go, consider the weather and check the KYMBA site as well as the trail conditions site.
You'll share the trails with walkers, joggers, and the occasional deer, squirrel, or chipmunk but what you'll find are well-designed flow trails that are just advanced enough to keep any rider engaged, yet intermediate riders can still ride the trails and not be overwhelmed with rough trails or technical sections. There are a few optional skill obstacle on the trail that can be easily ridden around by those not wanting to try them out but offers a bit of fun for the more advanced riders.
Some trails are marked on which direction the designers feel the trail is best ridden, most however are not, so always keep an eye ahead for other riders or trail users. Visibility on the trails is generally pretty good, so as long as you're watching and listening, everyone can enjoy the trails together.
And just like any other trail under KYMBA's sponsorship, if the trail conditions aren't right, or you prefer a hike, the trails at Veterans Park are an excellent light hike any time of year. I usually walk 30 to 40 miles a year at Veterans Park when I want to get out into the woods but the trail conditions aren't quite right. And if the trail conditions are really poor, Veterans has quite a few trails that are mostly grass but still offers a nice walk.
The trails have changed since this video was made, as some trails on the south side of the park were lost when East Brannon was extended, but is still a pretty decent idea of what you'll see at Veterans Park. This was taken in August 2013. The audio isn't great, but enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3tkFz9jo74
While there are maps online of the park, one great resource for a lot of trail maps is Open Street Maps, including various layers to visualize the trails or topography, etc. https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/37.95325/-84.50497
Please be respectful of our trails. Do not ride them when they are wet, check trail condition sites before going. Do not ride them on high-powered e-bikes, gasoline powered dirt bikes, horses, etc. Take in the scenery, and take out what you brought in.
